Study girl was originally a two minute clip created by the McCann London marketing agency, a video in which we can see a girl pierced with hopelessness and desperation. She is out of control and even contemplates taking her own life. She eventually discovers an inner strength to carry on with her life and dispell the overwhelming suicidal thoughts.

The marketers of this video wanted to spread a message in the far corners of the earth, emphasising the importance of mental health in students, a group of real persons which are generally neglected by society. Sadly, the marketers were shocked to see how many of these students are having suicidal thoughts, which is a troubling trend. This trend is associated with exam stress mostly, but not limited to this factor.

In my view, the system is corrupted with the ideea of performance, forcing students to achieve otherwise facing financial, psychological and moral consequences. If you take your time to stay in a student campus, or remember your experience, the stress feels intense and can be a real threat to the health of a student. It is still taboo to talk about mental health amongst students. Students are expected to be Mozart, to perform and to be in financial debt to creditors - the State.

From the original study girl clip, an artist created a series of wall arts that show the day to day reality of a student. The isolation created by the headphones and the confinement in the room seems like an enforced disciplinary action, similar to a solitary confinement room in a jail. Even if the colours of the room are vibrant, the cat is present to asssist the girl and the sun is shining, don’t let the appearances fool you. The stress level is real and the escapism, manifested by the presence of headphones even while the girl is sleeping, is as real as it gets. The girl is in a trance and is preety much confined in a room.

This form of art is awesome in the sense that it brings awareness and it shows the real problems of a group of persons who are struggling as much as every other man or woman. In some countries, to be a student means to agree to be in debt. They are even mocked "You are a student, you have to worries".

In my own personal opinion this is no way to treat a human being and it also shows that compassion is still offered by the students, compassion to animals and to people.

And what do we do to help students? How do we really see them?
