I was too young to know Freddie Mercury personally - and we obviously ran in quite different social groups - but I’ve done a lot of research on him as a person. Contrary to his wild on-stage persona, Freddie was a fairly introverted, withdrawn, and even shy person. For example, when he joined the band, Brian played piano on most of their first album simply because Freddie was too uncertain and undemanding to let them know that he played.
From what I have heard from friends and lovers, he was a very kind and generous person who doted on those he cared for and who always put them before himself. For example, he was very famous for saying that he wasn’t “the leader” of Queen, just the lead singer. He constantly tried to bring attention to the other members of the band.
There were dark sides to him, of course. From other interviews I’ve read, he was often a very insecure person who turned to promiscuous sex - at first with women and then mostly with men - as a way of making himself feel attractive and important. Freddie also GREATLY enjoyed drugs of various types, which never seemed to truly derail his life or his career.
In many ways, he was an enigma. Being on stage and performing turned him into a prima donna and a complex performing persona that captivated almost everyone who saw him live. And he, at times, indulged in the rock and roll lifestyle. But he also enjoyed spending quiet time with his cats, quietly relaxing with Brian, John, and Roger, and being with Mary - the Love of His Life, per the song title - when he could.
One could argue that he could have and should have done more to promote gay rights in a time when the AIDS epidemic was being ignored and demonized by the governments of the world, but as an intensely private and shy man, it was probably very hard for him to do so.

I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
ReplyDeleteliver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
